After a decade-long partnership with Robert Scardino, Jr., Scot established an office in San Marcos, Texas in 2004 and expanded the regional aspect of his practice to also include the Texas Hill Country. Although a native Houstonian growing-up in the Spring-Klein area and earning his law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, he fell in love with the Texas Hill Country while attending Southwest Texas State University and ultimately relocated his family to the area.

As mentioned briefly above, Scot is formerly of Scardino, Courtney & Fazel, L.L.P. Scot received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major from Southwest Texas State University in 1990 and his law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where he was a distinguished senior staff member of Law Review (published in the Fall of 1993) and graduated with honors. He began his legal career as a law clerk in 1993 with Robert A. Scardino, Jr. and David Cunningham in Houston. After receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1994, he immediately began practicing law under Mr. Scardino’s tutelage, forming Scardino & Courtney in 1994; Scardino & Courtney, L.L.P. in 2001; and, Scardino, Courtney & Fazel, L.L.P. in 2004.  Scot’s advocacy and trial skills benefited immensely from his partnership with Mr. Scardino and involved many “high-profile” cases. During a broadcast of the television news magazine 48 Hours, CBS News referred to Robert Scardino as “One of Houston’s top criminal defense lawyers”. He was also recognized as “Attorney of the Year” by the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association in 1999, sharing that distinction with Mike Ramsey, Dick DeGuerin, Dan Cogdell, Richard “Racehorse” Haynes, Paul Nugent and Mike DeGeurin.

Scot is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Criminal Law and his trial experience includes involvement in well over 100 trials in Texas state and Federal courts and extensive involvement in trials and prosecutions in the Federal District Courts in Louisiana, Mississippi, California and Florida. Scot is licensed in the State of Texas, as well as in the United States Federal District Courts, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as the United States Supreme Court.

His practice has been marked by numerous successes at the trial level and has been attorney of record in over 20 appeals heard by Texas Appellate Courts, U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Scot is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Harris County Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association, Travis County Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association, Texas Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association, as well as MENSA and has been recognized as one of the Top Lawyers of Houston by the readers, editors and staff of H Texas Magazine.
